Rabies Alert
May 5, 2021. Franklin, Fla. – The Florida Department of Health in Franklin County has issued a rabies alert for Franklin County in response to a fox that tested positive on May 5, 2021. The fox attacked an individual working outside at a residence on Bluff Rd in Apalachicola. The health department is also investigating another fox attack that occurred today involving an individual and her dog on Woodill Rd in Carrabelle. While those test results are still pending, we are asking all residents and visitors to please take extra caution while outdoors and be aware of your surroundings at all times. All persons involved in the investigation are receiving appropriate medical treatment.
All residents and visitors of Franklin County should be aware that rabies is present in the wild animal population and domestic animals are at risk if not vaccinated. The public is asked to maintain a heightened awareness that rabies is active in Franklin County. Alerts are designed to increase awareness to the public, but they should not give a false sense of security to areas that have not been named as under an alert. The recent rabies alert is for 60 days.
